Do you remember your teenage fire?

Through this transformative training, you will come face to face with the legacy of those years—the messages you took in about yourself, the world around you, and the significant relationships in your life.

By remembering who we were, what we needed, and how we felt, we become better listeners, become less judgemental, and gain the capacity to meet boys where they are—as they are.

Come join us and increase your skills to provide empathy, compassion, and connection to some deserving young men. Your family, friends, and co-workers will all benefit as well!

Please join us to launch the 2025/2026 school year!

Whether you’re new to youth mentoring, a returning “old hand”, or just curious about the BTM methodology, we invite you to join us and learn from some of our top trainers from across the country.

This ESSENTIAL training is for:

About the course leaders

Joe Sigurdson

Joe Sigurdson

In 1996, the Boys to Men Mentoring Network was founded by Herb Sigurdson (1927-1997), Joe Sigurdson and Craig McClain in La Mesa, California. Before Herb’s passing, he was a former Executive Director of Father Flanagan’s Boys Town and dedicated his life to building a better world.

Joe and Craig worked diligently to assemble a team of committed men and created a mentoring program that was meant to support the fatherless teenage boys in their community. They created a curriculum that incorporates holistic, intergenerational, and asset-based mentoring practices and encourages community involvement, intensive self-reflection, positive critical thinking habits, and self-accountability.

The curriculum is being replicated in various communities to empower young men around the world (United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa) that are autonomously governed and managed.

In August 2009, the first in-school group community was established in the San Diego public school system. This site-based group mentoring model has been a resounding success with school administrators, parents, mentors and, most importantly, the boys.

Joe Sigurdson currently serves as Chief Success Officer for Boys To Men in San Diego, and also serves on the Board of Directors for Boys To Men USA.

Steve Martin

Steve Martin is the Program Director, an ex-officio board member, and mentor for Boys to Men Mentoring Network of Virginia.

Steve’s first experience with Boys to Men was in 2002 at the mentor training, “Reclaiming Your Teenage Fire” help by the BTM chapter of Washington, DC. In 2003, he began the task of taking boys from Richmond to DC for biweekly meetings & activities. Steve started to train within the organization to execute mentor trainings and co-lead BTM initiations. He is now considered a full leader in the BTM Mentoring program, facilitating over 25 successful initiations in the Richmond area alone.

In 2010, under Steve’s direction, Boys To Men Mentoring Network of Virginia was officially incorporated. BTMVA currently maintains 50 weekly site-based mentoring circles that run during the school year.

Steve continues to oversee and manage four trainings per year for Mentors and Mentors-in-Training. In 2020 he received his certification in the work of “Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment for Adolescents.”

Steve was born and raised in the Westwood area of Richmond’s West End. He and his partner, Terry Curry, reside in Henrico County, VA.
